Coming to the stage at Soul Junction is Carlitta Durand. Over the past several years, she has been a constant name in the underground hip-hop, R&B, and soul scene. She rose to prominence from her contributions on Little Brother albums by providing stand-out hooks. Little Brother was a hip hop group from Durham known for their four acclaimed studio albums and six mixtapes. Durand continued to garner acclaim from her collaborations with notable and highly praised artists and producers including: 9th Wonder, Buckshot, Skyzoo, Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh, Tanya Morgan, Knowledge (of Kidz in the Hall), Zo!, M1 Platoon, and King Mez.
Durand has now added soloist to her resume with her latest album, I’ll Be Gorgeous When I Die. It exudes a mature and personal side as she touches on subjects such as love, divorce, sex, and summer heat! The April 2015 release includes production from Knowledge, Vaughn Garcia, Abjo, Picnictyme, and Grammy award-winning Symbolic One. Collaborations on the album include stand out Jesse Boykins III.
Her album are a result of her influences. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota into a multiracial family, Carlitta is very familiar with seeing the world from a unique and colorful perspective. At the tender age of 12, Carlitta began writing music. At 14 she recorded her first song, a Janet Jackson cover. Noticeably in her presence, stage-performance and songwriting, her inspiration and influences are Chaka Khan, Marvin Gaye, SWV, The Gap Band, A Tribe Called Quest, and especially Prince.
